THIS PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS A SHAFT SLEEVE BEING FACED-OFF. NOTE THE WHITE COLLET LOCATED IN THE MACHINES CHUCK. THESE TEFLON COLLETS INSURE THAT THE SHAFT IS RUNNING DEAD TRUE FOR THIS CRITICAL OPERATION. IF THE FACE IS NOT TRUE, THE SHAFT FACE WILL NOT MEET THE BUTT JOINT FACE PERFECTLY. THIS WILL CAUSE RUNOUT AND LOSS OF ENERGY. ALSO NOTE THE G9 SLEEVE.
THIS IS ANOTHER VIEW OF THE SAW TAPER MACHINE CUTTING A PURPLE HEART SHAFT BLANK. AFTER THE BASIC CONE SHAPE STARTS TO APPEAR, WE WILL CAREFULLY INSPECT THE SHAFT FOR DEFECTS. IF NONE ARE FOUND, THE SHAFT WILL HANG FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE ANY MORE MATERIAL IS REMOVED.
